An ever-popular question and request for us is to share the gear we use for travel vlogging and taking photos. Today we will be sharing with you some of the best camera gear and equipment for beginner travel vloggers. You don’t need to go out and spend a fortune on expensive camera gear. You will notice that there isn’t any expensive DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. Most people should just start by using what they already have.
I would highly recommend you read our article on Why you don’t need to buy an expensive DSLR camera for travel. It is a really good read for those of you who are not sure whether you need to get a new camera or not.
Arguably the best DSLR camera on the market. Not only is the photo quality good but the video quality is extremely good too. We started using this camera mainly for shooting B-roll. We love this camera but it is not our main camera for vlogging because it is heavy and doesn’t have a flip out screen.
We currently use the Canon G7x as our main vlogging camera. This camera is amazing. It is a small, compact, lightweight point and shoot camera worth less than $700. The photos this camera produces are really great and it can shoot in full HD. This camera is perfect for vlogging because it has a flip up screen, so you can see exactly what you are doing when you are filming yourself.
If the Canon 5D Mark IV and Canon G7x are too expensive you might be interested in these cameras, all under $500 and recommended by Amazon.
My current smartphone is the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and Kayleigh uses a Samsung Galaxy S9. We use these as our secondary vlogging cameras. The phones can shoot full HD video and are more than adequate as a video recorder.
GoPro Hero 3+ Black
I still own the GoPro Hero 3, an older version of the GoPro, but this camera is still amazing for those ultra wide and fisheye photos and videos. My main use for this camera is for underwater and action shots.
A tripod is an essential piece of equipment for any photographer and/or videographer. A tripod can make or break a photo or video so you really need to invest in a really good, stable tripod. I recommend two.
The Joby Gorillapod is a flexible tripod that can attach to almost any surface because of its bendy legs. We also use it as a stabiliser because it is perfect for holding while vlogging.
I brought the Manfrotto 190xProB back in 2012. This is an extremely stable tripod, it is the tripod we use for our talking tips videos and I use it for my long exposure and landscape photography. I would highly recommend this tripod, if not this tripod then any tripod made by Manfrotto.
My main desktop computer is an iMac Pro. It is amazing for photo and video editing and is super easy to use. I enjoy using this because the screen is so good for visual artists like myself.
Kayleigh’s Microsoft Surface Book has amazing specs and is extremely powerful. This is the perfect laptop for travellers because it is super thin, lightweight and can be used as both a laptop and a tablet.
Our go-to memory cards are SanDisk, they offer the best cards on the market. We use SanDisk CF cards for our DSLRs, SanDiskSD cards for the Canon G7x and SanDisk Micro SD cards for our Samsung Galaxy phones.
Video editing software
Adobe Premiere Pro CC
Adobe Premiere Pro is, in my opinion, the best video editing software available. The best thing about this software is it integrates well with all other Adobe products like Photoshop, Lightroom and After Effects. There are also thousands of how to tutorials on Youtube so if you are ever stuck on something it is easy to find out how to fix it.
A hard drive is an extremely important component of any system. Backing up all your data is a must.
I highly recommend Seagate 4TB hard drives because they will hold thousands upon thousands of files. I have purchased multiple drives and have never had a problem with them.
